The new rifles available to shoot from Savage this year were the Impulse Elite Precision in 6.5 Creedmoor and the Model 64 Precision in .22lr. The Impulse Elite Precision was chambered in 6.5 Creedmoor and had a suppressor installed when we could fire it. The Model 64 accuracy in hand, unfortunately, did not have the 20 magazine that usually goes with it, but a suppressor was installed.

This was not only my first time shooting the Savage Impulse Elite Precision, but also my first time engaging in any kind of brutal defiance. The Impulse Elite Precision is rock solid and thanks to the MDT chassis and Ruby 13.7 lbs. The action requires a little strength, but it is quick to perform.

Speaking of speed, if you don't do the push step quickly, it won't work as well. The Impulse Elite Precision in 6.5 Creedmoor was an absolutely sweet shot, especially suppressed and for its weight. Even with a sub-optimized bipod and bench, effects were easily visible behind the scope and follow-up shots were quick.

I'm very curious to see what kind of teams the pressure action combined with the Palma draft barrel will bring on paper. If you're looking for a mid-priced, fast-running precision bolt gun, you might want to check out the Impulse Elite Precision.

The Model 64 Tactical is an interesting combination of mid-20th century idiosyncratic style with modern features. A forward thrust magazine release is more of a novelty than ever, but the MDT chassis and 20-MOA rail make hitting 150 yards fun and easy in a rifle under $300 .22! I don't know if Savage gives the Model 64 Precision rifles a slight trigger adjustment, but the trigger was nice and crisp. The ability to put the canister on the rifle also made targets stronger than the rifle report. With more time and ammo I'd like to see how much success I can have with the Model 64's accuracy.

Inserting the magazine into this rifle is odd. The front charger socket indicator is an odd place that requires you to use your finger.

The safety is a bit odd on the right side of the receiver. It's not terrible to reach, but either break the case and use your thumb or index finger to pull it out.

Overall, the receiver on the Savage 64 is really long: the length from the trigger face to the slide is 6 1/8″ 4 1/4″ on the Remington 597 and 4 1/2″ on the Ruger 10/22. That's an extra 2 inches of receiver and that makes the gun a little longer than it should be.

I hope some of you have very accurate Savage 64s. This one. . .not really. I've seen huge straight lines shot at targets at 50 yards that resulted in groups over 3 inches. Although it had a range many times greater than the rifle above, the accuracy of the first shot with the bullet was far from the group.

After playing around with different torque settings on the action screws, the string decreased significantly and I was able to hit 1 inch groups at 25 yards. Still not amazing accuracy, but much better than the groups found with the factory torque settings on the action screws!

Some people have reported issues with bad magazines, others need to oil the Savage 64 well. This one worked like a top: 100% reliable up to 500 rounds per range session using all kinds of different ammo.

This rifle is hard to recommend without the aftermarket support and accuracy that comes with the comparably priced Marlin 795. There's also the ubiquitous Ruger 10/22 at a slightly higher price point with better finished parts and WAYYY more aftermarket support. However, if you don't plan on making any modifications to your rifle and find a Savage 64 on sale, don't hesitate.
