Hearing Loss Code H1 - An audiogram is a chart or graph that shows the results of a hearing test. At first, it may seem like a bunch of confusing lines and symbols. But if you learn to read and interpret audiograms, you will better understand your hearing loss. Most importantly, a hearing care professional will use the results to help determine the best type of hearing aid for you.

The purpose of the hearing aid test is to measure the hearing ability at several frequencies in each ear independently. This test produces a graph called an audiogram.

An audio device modulates hearing levels at different frequencies, or pitches, in a quiet listening environment. The threshold is defined as the softest sound that can be detected about 50 percent of the time. So don't be surprised if you feel like you're "missing" a few bells.

The important thing to remember is that the audiogram is quantitative, not qualitative. It uses a specific rating system to measure residual audibility in a quiet room; the quality of your hearing is literally indescribable. It also cannot detect whether you have hidden hearing loss.

The horizontal axis (x-axis) represents the frequency (pitch) from the lowest to the highest. The lowest frequency tested is usually 250 Hertz (Hz), and the highest is usually 8000 Hz. You can think of the frequency axis like the keys on a piano where the pitch gets louder as you go from left to right. Most speech falls in the range of 250 to 6000 Hz, with vowel sounds in the lower frequencies and consonants such as S, F, SH, CH, H, TH, T and Ksound in the higher frequencies.

The horizontal axis (y-axis) of the audiogram represents the intensity (loudness) of sound in decibels (dB), with the lowest level at the top of the graph. Although the upper left side of the graph has a mark of -10 dB or 0 dB, this does not mean that there is no sound. Zero decibels actually represents the lowest level of sound that the average person with normal hearing will hear, for a given frequency. (It's actually a straight curve!)

There are different symbols used to indicate the threshold on the sensor, depending on the specific test conditions. The test with headphones is called an air transport test because sound must pass through the air inside the earpiece to reach the inner ear. The result of the airflow of the right ear is marked "O", and the result of the left ear is marked "X". The bone conduction test, where a device is placed behind the ear to transmit sound by vibrating the mastoid bone, is marked "[" or "<".

What is important to understand is that the response from the left ear represents blue, and from the right ear represents red. Each symbol on the chart represents a threshold for a specific frequency. In the example above, the threshold for 2000 Hz is 50 dB per ear. After all the thresholds are measured and plotted on a graph, they are combined to form an easy-to-read line for both left and right ears.

If the two lines almost intersect, the hearing loss is considered to be proportional, or equal in both ears. If the lines don't overlap, your hearing loss is considered asymmetrical, meaning your ears have different degrees of hearing loss.

Looking at the audiogram above, normal hearing is represented in shaded blue above the 25-dB line that runs across the graph from left to right. If the threshold mark falls in the blue shade, your hearing is considered within normal limits. Any signal below the shaded area, however, indicates hearing loss at that frequency.

Your hearing care professional will classify the severity of your hearing loss, or level of hearing loss, by where these symptoms appear on the chart. Hearing loss is classified as mild, mild, moderate, moderate to severe, severe or profound. They will also describe the pattern of loss, generally as flat, sloping or rising.

The space between the normal hearing zone and the threshold represents all the sounds lost due to hearing loss. The bigger the space, the less noise you hear. For many people with hearing loss, hearing aids can be the solution to fill the gap and provide the missing sound.

Adults were classified as having normal hearing if their responses indicated that they could hear sounds between 0 and 25 dB in the frequency range. A child is considered to have hearing within normal limits if the response is between 0 and 15 dB in the frequency range.

After your visit to the hearing center, they must give you a report on your visit. If they are not included in the report, ask for a copy of your sound test results. Not only will these results serve as a prescription for you, but they will serve as a baseline for you and your hearing care professional to monitor changes in your hearing along the way.

If you struggle to hear or notice ringing in your ears, use the directory to find a hearing center near you. Then take it a step further and learn how to read an audiogram. This will allow you to become an informed participant in your hearing health care and make informed decisions about your treatment options.

You can see the sound image to understand your hearing ability. This chart shows the quietest level at which sounds can be heard at a low level as recorded by an audiologist or other health professional during a hearing test.

An audiogram can diagnose hearing loss and show the type of hearing loss you have. It can vary the hearing in each ear and whether you have hearing loss on one side or both.

You should seek guidance from your doctor or audiologist for treatment options, but knowing the basics of treatment equipment can help you determine what you're hearing in the world around you.

An audiogram is the visual result of a hearing test performed by an audiologist or other health care professional. This test measures possible hearing loss. The test uses a piece of technology called an audiometer that can be connected to headphones, speakers, or hearing aids. An audio device emits a sound that measures the loudness and frequency of the sound.

You can have a hearing test in a quiet place at your doctor's office. The test administrator will ask you to raise your hand or press a button when you hear a sound. The moderator will mark the sound you hear.

An audiometer can measure different parts of the ear depending on how you receive sound. Headphones, speakers, and bone conduction devices can measure different parts of the ear to determine the type of hearing loss.

You may have some kind of hearing loss. Some causes of hearing loss are reversible and others are not.

You may ask for a hearing test if you notice changes in your hearing, or your doctor may recommend it as part of a routine checkup. You can get an audiogram at any age, but the test and the information it reveals will be different between adults and children.

Most children's hearing is checked at birth. Children need testing if they have speech or other developmental delays.

Adults over 50 may develop hearing loss with age. Some estimates show that 25% of adults over the age of 50 and 50% of people over the age of 80 have hearing loss.

Audiograms are traditionally done in the doctor's office, but there is new technology that allows people to see their hearing at home.

As a traditional test. Seek medical advice if you experience hearing loss from these automated devices.

The test operator will record the signal when you show the lowest intensity when you hear the frequency (tone). This sign shows your entrance level.

The audio system will adjust different threshold levels for each ear. This line shows your hearing intensity level in sound and frequency.

Normal hearing levels are between -10 and 15 decibels for any beginner. You may have a slight hearing between 16 and 25 decibels, but this may not require further correction. Your doctor may recommend a follow-up audiological hearing test to make sure your hearing isn't getting worse.

Seek advice from a medical professional to review your audiogram and provide treatment options for your hearing loss. An audiogram will provide guidance on how to treat the condition by noting the type of hearing loss you have, whether one or both ears have hearing loss, and how much hearing loss you have.
