Health Dept Corpus Christi - CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - Health officials are trying to reveal details of the technology involved in Nueces County's first case of monkeys.
3NEWS heard Thursday evening from representatives of CHRISTUS Spohn that the patient received monkey therapy and was released. The Corpus Christi-Nueces County Health District said the patient was a man in his 20s and that the case is considered "probable" until the sample is tested by the Centers for Disease Control, the only agency that conducts tests can confirm the patient. he had a monkey.

Dr Dante Gonzalez, deputy director of public health at the City-County Public Health District, said it may take a while for the results to come because the CDC is overwhelmed with samples from across the region. He said maybe the group will not come to us.

"We received information from the government directly. So the government puts them in a system called NEDS. This means the National Electronic Disease Surveillance System, "said Gonzalez. "And in this system we download information and reports from the laboratory and then analyze the results. So when we looked at the results that we saw, there were positive results for Orthopox. There are no good results for monkeys."
Orthopoxvirus is a group of viruses that also includes other types of smallpox, such as chickenpox. Gonzalez said the CDC needs to know what type of smallpox the patient has.
"Every time we find something like this, even if it's suspicious, we release what we can do," Gonzalez said. "I really am. I think that's a good word for it. Really, it's about to get better. "
The City-County Public Health District released a news release Friday about the incident after 3NEWS spoke with Gonzalez.
